Studies on biology and management of sapota bud borer, Anarsia achrasella Bradley in Thane District

Investigation was undertaken with some specific objectives like, incidence of sapota leaf webber, bud borer and flower thrips, bionomics and chemical control of sapota bud borer, A. achrasella.

Observation recorded on incidence of three important pests of sapota. The highest per cent bud infestation due to A. achrasella was found during the month of May and February.

Results of the field experiment conducted to evaluate the efficacy of various pesticides against A. achrasella indicated that there were significant differences in various treatments with pesticides at one, three, five, seven and ten days post treatment. Application of 0.05 per cent dichlorvos, 0.0075 per cent cypermethrin and 0.1 per cent malathion were found promising in checking infestation of bud borer of sapota than rest of the treatments tried during present investigation. The neem products Nimbecidine @ 2 ml/1, Neemazal @ 2.5 ml/1, the Bt formulation, Delfin @1.5 g/1, and the fungus Nomuraea rileyi @ 2 g/1 though found superior over control, were relatively least effective against sapota bud borer.

The field efficacy of some pesticides tried during present investigation are required to be tested for at least two or more seasons before passing any recommedation to the farmers use, as present observations are based on single season data. From the human safety point of view, it will also be worth testing to see the toxic residue of insecticides in the harvested fruits of sapota, as frequent pickings are made during peak fruiting season of the crop.
