Potential for management for Plutella Xylostella (L) larvae with some eco-friendly insecticides
Cruciferous vegetables are economically important throughout the world. However their production is severely affected by insect pest, especially by the diamondback month (DBM). Due to frequent and indiscriminate use of synthetic insecticides DBM has become resistant to every synthetic insecticide used against it in the field. In view of this, studies were conducted to find out the susceptibility status of field collected DBM larvae to different commercial formulations of few selected novel insecticides viz. fenthiuron, lufenurin, NSKE and endosulfan.
The results of laboratory studies with novel insecticides are greatly influenced by susceptible / resistant host, method of manufacture, type of formulations, etc. hence, it is difficult to specifically compare and correlate findings of two different investigations. However, the results obtained in the study were meaningfully discussed with literature available on susceptibility of DBM to novel insecticides.
Though, the use of novel insecticides against DBM have proved successful in several parts of the world, some reports indicated resistance to them in the field. Limited use and low persistence of novel insecticides are probably the main reasons for low resistance to novel insecticides in the field as far as India is concerned. The results suggest that the surest way to conserve the sustained efficacy of novel insecticides is to use it judiciously as a component of Plutella xylostella L. management program.
