Efficacy of different herbicides in controlling Phalaris minor and associated weeds in Wheat
Wheat (Triticum aestivum) occupies the prime postion in the world. In India, it is second important food crop being next to rice and contributes to the total foodgrain production of the country to the extent of about 25% and it occupies approximately 20 % of the wold’s cultivated land.
Wheat is infested with both grassy weeds, viz. Phalaris minor, Avena ludoviciana, Avena fatua and broad level weeds, viz. Chenopodium album, Lathyrus aphaca, Vicia sativa.
Little seed canary grass (Phalaris minor) is an important weed in rice – wheat-cropping system. Phalaris minor can be controlled by different methods, and of these, the use of herbicide (chemical method) is gaining importance year after year due to quick, efficient kill of these target plants.
Keeping the above views in consideration, the investigation was planned and conducted.
The data revealed that application of Isoproturon at higher rate resulted lesser Phalaris population and minimum Phalaris dry weight throughout the crop growth stages. Among the herbicides applied besides Isoproturon, Sulfosulforon at 27.5 g ha-1, Clodinofop at 50 g ha-1, recorded minimum dry weight. Highest weed control also recorded in these treatments. Lowest weed population was recorded with Isoproturon at 1000 g ha-1. Among the herbicides used, Sulfosulforun at 25.50 g ha-1, Isoproturon at 1000 g ha-1, , Fenoxaprop at 100 g ha-1, and Clodnofop at 50 g ha-1, recorded maximum grain yield as compared to respective herbicide treatment in controlling weeds and improving the grain yield. However, the author expresses the need to confirm the results since data is based on one year of work.
