Efficacy of new herbicides and herbicidal mixtures for weed control in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

A field experiment was conducted to find out the efficacy of new herbicides and herbicidal mixture for weed control in wheat. The twelve weed control treatments were replicated four times in randomized block design. Wheat variety Raj-3077 was used as a test crop.

The results showed that signigicant reduction in weed count was brought by metsulfuron-methyl + 2, 4-D, metsulfuron- methyl alone and hand weeding at 60, 90 DAS and at harvest over rest of the treatments. These treatments also resulted in significant reduction in weed biomass production and nutrient depletion by weeds at all the stages of crop growth over all other treatments.

The weed control efficiency of 89.71 and 89.58 per cent was obtained with hand weeding and metsulfuron-methyl + 2, 4-D (2+250 g ha-1 ). The maximum values of growth and yield attributes were obtained with weed free treatment followed by metsulfuron-methyl + 2, 4-D (2+250 g ha -1 ), hand weeding and metsulfuron-methyl alone.

Application of metsulfuron – methyl + 2, 4-D ( 2+250 g ha –1 ), hand weeding, Metsulfuron – methyl alone remain at par among themselves recorded significantly higher grain, straw and biological yield over other treatments with minimum weed competition index.

The maximum NPK content in grain and straw at harvest and uptake by crop and protein content in grain were achieved with weed free treatment followed by hand weeding and metsulfuron-methyl+2, 4-D (2+250 g ha -1 ). Metsulfuron–methyl +2, 4-D (2+250g ha –1 ) fetched the highest net return and incremental cost benefit ratio.
